Book Review of Rules

Rules

Lord, C. (2008). Rules. NY: Scholastic.

In this Newbery award winning book, 12-year-old Catherine simply want a peaceful and normal life. She feels like this will always be impossible which her brother around who has autism. She feels like her family revolves around him and his disability and she is constantly overlooked and ignored. She tries teach her brother “rules” to shield herself from embarrassment when they are in public. She loves her brother greatly but wants to be accepted by her peers badly. She becomes friends with Jason, a boy in a wheelchair, and he shows her that what others think doesn’t matter as long as she is happy.

This is a fantastic book for learning about tolerance and acceptance. It is very relatable that preteen Catherine wants to feel normal by society's standards. I loved the journey she went on during this book to come to the realization that no one is normal. This will be a very eye opening book for preteens and should be read by all readers ages 10 and up.
