Book Review of Mirror, Mirror

Mirror, Mirror

Singer, M. (2010). Mirror, Mirror. NY: Dutton.

In this unique poetry book, fairy tale protagonist and villains have a modern take on their classic stories. Not only does the battling viewpoints on each page make it interesting, but the structure of the poems are very unique. Each page has two poems, one from the protagonist and one from the villain. The second poem is the reverse lines of the first poem. This book will definitely have you thinking about these classic characters with a different perspective.

I found this book to epitomize why poetry is so fun and some of the most creative writing out there. It was absolutely fascinating to see the same poem reconstructed to have a completely different meaning. I love how the author played with perspective. I believe this book will help students think outside the box and exemplify the fun one can have while constructing poetry. I recommend this book for grades 3-5.
