Brown Girl Dreaming
Woodson, J. (2014). Brown Girl Dreaming. NY: Penguin.
In this Newbery Honor and Coretta Scott King Award winning book of poetry, author Jacqueline Woodson details her experienced growing up as an African American in the 1960's and 1970's. Some of Woodson's poems detail her struggle with reading and writing as a child and how her love of books and desire to write keep her persevering. She also talks about her experiences in the Civil Rights movement.
I found this book to be really emotionally powerful and moving. Woodson is so eloquent in her words that you can feel every emotion she was going though. It gives readers great insights and empathy for the struggles and challenges she endured. I would recommend this book of poetry for readers in grades 4-6.
