Where the Wild Things Are
Sendak, M. (1963). Where the Wild Things Are. NY: HarperCollins.
In this classic children's tale, Max puts on his wolf suit and makes all sorts of mischief for his mother. She deems him 'Wild Thing' and sends him to bed without his his dinner. That night in his room, Max imagines a forest growing around him and the ocean rushes by with a boat to take Max to where the wild things live. Max tames the beast and makes himself king of their, and then the wild rumpus begins. But once everything quiets down, he becomes lonely and realizes it is time to go home to the where someone loves him above all others.
This book exemplifies the unbreakable bond between a mother and son. While Max is angry he can't be wild and wants to be free of the rules of his mother, he realizes that no one will love him as much as his mother and that is worth being a little better behaved form This book has stood the test of time as one of the finest children's book of all time. I highly recommend this book for ages 5-8.
