Book Review of This is Not My Hat

This is Not My Hat

Klassen, J. (2012). This is Not My Hat. Boston, MA: Candlewick.

The book opens with a tiny fish explaining that the hat he is wearing is not his, as the title implies. The little fish comes up with excuses and explanations as to why he should have the hat instead of the big fish he took it from and how he'll get away with his theft free and clear. He doesn't realize that trouble is following close behind.

This book won the Caldecott Medal for illustration and rightfully so. While the story itself is amusing, the illustrations add volumes to the humor of the story. I enjoyed reading this book from the perspective of an arrogant trickster fish who confidence in his lies gets him in trouble in the end. I believe young readers will be greatly amused by this story and illustrations and gain a valuable lesson in honesty and integrity. I recommend this book for readers ages 3-6.
