Skulduggery Pleasant is the first in the series of novels center on the titular character, Skulduggery Pleasant. He is a centuries old walking skeleton detective, who has a mean wit and the arrogance to match. Skulduggery Pleasant saves 12-year-old Stephanie Edgley from being murdered by a mysterious man in her recently inherited uncle's house. Once saved, Stephanie begins to unravel the mysterious and magical world her uncle was in and gets pulled into it. She takes the name Valkyrie Cain and partners up with Skulduggery to solve her uncle's murder. She meets all types of strange people along the way and helps Skulduggery to prevent the scheming Nefarian Serpine from capturing the Sceptre of Ancients, which is a mystical weapon that can slay gods. Skulduggery and Valkyrie defeat Nafarian and destroy the Sceptre. Skulduggery takes Valkyrie on as his partner and as a student in sorcery. Valkyrie discovers she is a descendant of mystical, ancient people and she has magic abilities.
With the mixture of fun, magic, action, sinisterness, and humor, this is a great book for middle school students. This book was a fast read and all the suspense made it a definite page turner. The amount of of action and mysticism could make even the most hesitate reader enjoy this book and the fact that its the first in the series can ensure an instant follower of Skulduggery Pleasant adventures.
